BREXIT – the people’s vote. Crisis of Journalism in Democracy

The vote for BREXIT, for Great Britain to leave the European Union, is a vote of the people. Was it a good idea to set the frame for voting in this way? Did the voters really see and understand all the consequences involved?

BREXIT to me also shows a crisis of journalism. Media has been unable to transmit the pros of the EU to the common people.

The votes show a strong split between the metropolitan areas and the countryside. ” We trust the people with big decisions” Prime Minister David Cameron said addressing the international community after the vote.

But the complexity and the huge amounts of information going around make it much more difficult for voters to find out right from wrong, and to make them understand what is at stake when they vote. To keep democracy alive, we need  better journalism! Journalism that is informative AND understandable for all!
