Journalists loose, when Donald Trump won the US elections yesterday. Lost in information and orientation? Who expected this outcome?
The unpredicted victory of Donald Trump illustrates a crisis in media, as did the outcome of the BREXIT vote. Journalists did not look close enough, wide enough, not deep enough into changes in society, and into the traces the financial crisis has left in the US – the very basic mistrust against the establishment, politics, leaders.
We as jouralists will have to be more aware of those who live in the shadow, who do not participate in big events, who live off-road the main stream. These people need to be given a voice. And we need to be aware of numbers as an indicator for changes, much more then trends. In times of mass media, we are easily misled by PR and too much – true or false? – information. Lost.
